The Workshop

Pre-conference workshop   Monday 29th January 2007, Lisbon, Portugal

About the Workshop: Advanced Intelligence Analysis

Analysis–the third phase in the Intelligence Cycle–can can be defined as the process of developing raw all-source data and information into finished intelligence for executives to use in decision-making and action. It involves the evaluation, integration, and interpretation of all available data–which is often fragmented and even contradictory–as well as the production of future-oriented intelligence ‘products’.

This advanced level workshop is designed for experienced Competitive Intelligence (CI) practitioners. It seeks to develop in participants the abilities and skills necessary to conduct improved intelligence analysis. These core skills include critical thinking, the planning and co-ordination of all-source information collection, the use of analytical tools in the research process, and the effective dissemination of intelligence findings. Practical exercises will therefore focus on ‘out-of-the-box’ thinking, directing CI collection operations, report writing, and oral briefing skills.

Workshop Agenda

09:00 Registration
09:30 Start of workshop
  • Is CI an art or a science? Does it, in other words, depend mainly on subjective, intuitive judgment or, rather, on structured, systematic analytical methods?
  • How should CI analysts deal with cognitive biases?
  • What is meant by deductive versus inductive reasoning? And how does this affect intelligence analysis?
  • How can analysts avoid the dangers and pitfalls of ‘politicization’ of intelligence?

12:30 Lunch

Participants will also learn, and practice in break-out sessions, the application of techniques virtually unique to intelligence analysis: These include:

  1. Alternative Outcomes Analysis
  2. Competing Hypotheses
  3. Linchpin Analysis
  4. Opportunity Analysis
  5. Personality Profiling

Finally, participants will be introduced to a series of tips and methodologies necessary for effective ‘tradecraft’ and the production of CI reporting that makes a difference.

16:00 End of workshop
